In Canada, where she lived for quite a long time, Sylviane Deferne taught the piano from 1990 to 1996 at the University of Montreal, as a « chargée de cours ».

She returned to Switzerland in the summer of 1996 and was appointed to teach piano at the Conservatory of Neuchâtel, where she remained until 2009. There she set up groups and special projects for her professional and amateur students to play together so that they could share and learn from each other.

Since 2009, Sylviane Deferne is a professor at the Haute école de musique de Genève.

She has given Masterclasses all over the world, mainly in the Unite States, Canada, Switzerland, Romania, Korea, Japan, France and Austria.

In March and December 2018, Sylviane Deferne and her students and alumni of the Haute école de musique de Genève featured the full version of the 24 preludes and the 12 etudes by Claude Debussy in two concerts at the Ansermet Studio in Geneva.
